Someone thought this was a good idea:
Spanish basketball team
What, couldn’t they get a shot of them being 4 feet tall or doing complex math?

You do not want to see it. Trust me.

Barroids rookie card

Here are three interviews from the Jim Rome show regarding the Barry Bonds controversy. Right click on the links below and choose “Save as”.

The first is with Tom Verducci, the Sports Illustrated writer who has been writing about the story for the past year or so. He comments on the excerpts of the new book that appeared in the SI issue from a couple of weeks ago.

The second is with former MLB commissioner Faye Vincent. His interviews are always good for putting things into perspective compared to the Pete Rose ban and for looking at it from a legal and union-relations standpoint.

The third is with Lance Williams, one of the authors of the new book Game of Shadows. This one is really good; gives a great outline of the high points of the book as well as a discussion of the sources that were used.

The Passion of the Centerfielder

By Tom, December 21, 2005, 2:46 pm

I do not like David Ortiz. I hate the Boston Red Sox. I don’t think a DH should ever win the MVP. But if I had a vote for MVP, I’d cast it for Big Poopi.

Why?

Because after last night, I don’t want Alex Rodriguez to get it. Scratch that; after the last week, I don’t want Alex Rodriguez to get it. In the regular season, Rodriguez was more valuable than Ortiz. Their offensive stats were almost identical, but Rodriguez also played an outstanding third base, while Ortiz sat in the dugout, presumably eating donuts.

But the New York Yankees are not about the regular season. They are about winning the World Series, or at least they used to be. But that is hard to do when your $250,000,000-MVP-candidate-third-baseman goes .133 for the series and does not drive in a single run. Grounding into a double play when you are the tying run at the plate in the 9th inning of an elimination game is inexcusable.

He’s done it again. Top of the 8th, no outs, Yankees down 6-5 at Fenway. Posada leads off with a double, and Torre sends Tony Womack in to run for him.

Why???

It’s a desperation move to get a single run that will only tie the game. If that is the only run they score, we’re now stuck in a situation with possible extra innings coming up and our all-star catcher is no longer available. This is going to bite us in the behind–you just know his spot is going to come up again, and we’ll be stuck with a scrub hitting in it. Same thing with Giambi; Torre pulled him in the last inning for Tino’s defense at 1st. Now his spot will come up again and instead of a guy who has been hitting home runs in every game for almost a week will be on the bench. It’s driving me crazy.

EDIT: Well, we got our tying run, and that’s it. Middle of the 8th, tie game, and Giambi and Posada are on the bench and we’re stuck with Womack and Martinez.

EDIT #2: Martinez and Womack are now a combined 0-2. Luckily for Torre, A-Rod hit a 2-run shot before they came up. Now it’s up to Skeletor Mariano Rivera to retire the top of the BoSox order in the bottom of the 9th.

EDIT #3: Skeletor comes through again, striking out Johnny “The Passion of the Centerfielder” Damon, Edgar “I couldn’t think of a nickname” Renteria, and David “Big Poopy” Ortiz. Yankees win! TTTTHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!

It’s the 4th inning right now, and Kevin Brown has already given up 8 earned runs to the freaking DEVIL RAYS. Seriously, have we gotten anything from him except heartache? The only positive thing that ever came out of trading for him is that we got rid of Jeff Weaver in the transaction. Why doesn’t he just do us a favor and punch the dugout wall again.

The Anaheim Angles seem like they change their name more often than John Camp Cougarmellon:

1961 - The Los Angeles Angels
1966 - The California Angels
1997 - The Anaheim Angels
2005 - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

In the next name change, they should try to be a bit more specific. How about “The Los Angeles, California Angels of Anaheim representing Orange County Mellencamp”?

Last night the Yankees beat the Red Sox and one Pedro Martinez (his brother is Ramon). This morning I was reading the game summary on Yahoo! Sports, and I ran across a quote from Pedro that almost made me spit coffee all over my laptop. This may just be the best quote I’ve ever read:

“What can I say — just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy,” he said. “I can’t find a way to beat them at this point. … They’re that good. They’re that hot right now — at least against me. I wish they would disappear and not come back.”

HAHAHAHAHA…. how does that taste, BostonFan? I’m sure you are VERY happy to see your star pitcher just bend over and take it like that. Let’s take a quick inventory: We have Derek Jeter diving into the stands and wearing the front-row seats; you have Pete Martinez publicly accepting that it is his lot in life to lose to the Yankees. I can’t imagine why you haven’t won anything since 1918…
